Reading Between the Lines – Contextually conceptual

Sometimes you have to squint to see the big picture. Between the details, between the lines, but mostly between life… The experimental church design of the architect duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh stands all off the coast of Belgium, in all its tangibility and conceptuality.

Doesn’t how we look at things directly affect what we are looking at? It’s all about perspective. A monumental structure or an installation that blends into the landscape. The project ‘Reading between the Lines’ emerges from the coming together of abstract lines. More than two thousand metal plates in a one hundred storey metal construction merge together to form a ten metre long structure that is as eye-catching as it can be. By its very nature, the structure invites the observer to experience it. Contrary to classical methods and motivations, it is clear that the project is conceived with an artistic intention. As the title suggests, you have to read between the lines.

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh is a collaboration between Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh. The duo combines their architectural background with their artistic intentions and leaves their touch on the spaces in everyday life. Their works defy the conventional and normative; they adopt new, experimental and expressionist approaches and become cultural pioneers. As the light dances between the iron plates, we let ourselves in the atmosphere of the church.
